Walter L. Wells

Walter Walt L. Wells, 67, of Bridgewater, formerly of Brockton, died Friday, December 26, 2014, at St. Elizabeths Hospital, Boston, after a brief illness. Walt and his loving wife, Linda J. (Merrey) Wells, recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late Walter and Olga Wells. He and his wife, Linda, lived in the city until 16 years ago when they moved to Bridgewater. Following his graduation from Brockton High School in 1966, Walt joined the U.S. Army and served in South Vietnam from January until December of 1968. Following his return from Vietnam, he served as a member of a Military Honor Guard in the Washington DC area. Since his discharge from the Army, Walt has worked as an industrial heating technician. He had been a highly respected employee of George T. Wilkinson, Inc., a mechanical engineering firm based in Rockland. Walt was an avid hiker. For many years, he served as hiking chair and board member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club. As a hiking leader for the organization, Walt led many hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as the Adirondacks in New York. In 2005, he and two friends climbed the Chilkoot Trail, a high mountain pass used by gold seekers in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, which runs from Dyea, Alaska, to Lake Bennett, British Columbia. In September 2009, he was recognized by the AMC for having climbed all 48 of the New Hampshires 4000 Footer peaks. Walt was also a well-known car guy, an avid follower of National Hot Rod Association "drag races". A few years ago, he became the proud owner of a 1973 Corvette Convertible, which he lovingly restored to its original beauty. Father of David and his wife, Laura of West Bridgewater, Amy of Alexandria, Virginia, and Adam and his wife Jenny of New Bedford, Walts greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved children and his grandchildren, Amanda and Aidan Wells of West Bridgewater, and Sam, Leo, and Lois Wells of New Bedford. Walt is also survived by his sister, Linda Pearson of Brockton and her late husband Rick; his brothers-in law, Douglas Merrey and his wife Karen of Pittsboro, N.C., and Brian Merrey of Raynham; and his sisters-in-law, Janet Bayard and her husband Bill of New Hampshire, Gail Haille and her husband George of Florida, Doreen Siskin of Middleboro, and their families. A funeral service was held Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 900 Main St., Brockton. Visitation was held Friday, January 2, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St., Brockton. The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 5 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02108
