John Hess

HESS, JOHN ROSSITER III 93, died on January 13, 2015 in Providence, RI. He was predeceased by his wives Gwendolyn (Fairchild) and Janice (Hill). Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John R and Dorothy (O'Leary) Hess. After graduating from Brown University in 1943, John ("Jack" to many) served as a Master Sergeant in the US Army in Europe during WWII. He was VP sales at George Mann Company and formed his own company, John R. Hess & Co., Inc. in 1969. He remained active in the industry until his death. He served as a founding leader and Past President of the National Association of Chemical Distributors and the Chemical Education Foundation and was the first recipient of their lifetime achievement award. Just this past year he was honored for his 40 years of contribution to these groups. While in his 70's, he joined the Peace Corps and served 3 years in the Czech Republic. He was a Past President of Hog Island, Inc. and spent over 70 great summers there. He was a member at Rhode Island Country Club and Royal Dornoch Golf Club. He was very active in civic affairs in Barrington where he served as Chairman of the Zoning Board for 20 plus years and served as the first Chairman of the Bristol County Water Authority and was active with the Barrington YMCA. He leaves a daughter, Marcia Gonzalez Baube Hess of Bristol, his sons and daughters-in law, Stephen and Patricia Hess of Rehoboth and Bristol and Peter and Elaine Hess of Bristol, and grandchildren; Korinne and Tim Sullivan, Knight Hess, Kyle and Sara Hess, Michelle Gonzalez, Peter and Lynn Hess, Patrick and Sarah Hess, a great grandson Max, Jan's children Sue Root, Becky Durkin, Jeff Hill and a dear companion, Ava Allsman. He had two sisters, Nancy Spencer and Joan Clayton (deceased), and predeceased by sons in law, Michael Gonzales and Ian Baube. John Hess had many friends from many circles including Hog Island, the Barrington YMCA, Peace Corps and the industry in which he served for over 60 years. He will be greatly missed. There will be a private burial and the memorial service will be at the Barrington Congregational Church, 460 County Road Barrington, RI on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Bayside YMCA and the Women's Resource Center would be appreciated. smithmason.com for information and online condolences.
