NEWPORT NEWS - Susan Love Crowder Burks, 74, passed away in Newport News on January 2, 2015. Susan was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on August 21, 1940, to James Edgar and Louise Mae Crowder and was raised in nearby Edmond, OK. In 1962, Susan graduated from St. Mary's College of Notre Dame with a major in History and minor in German. That same year, she married Harold David Burks and moved to Virginia for Harold's position as a physicist with NASA in Hampton. She worked in a manpower programming position at Langley Air Force Base from 1963 to 1966. After giving birth to the couple's only child, Stephanie, she became a traditional stay at home wife but quickly took on additional responsibilities. She cared for her ailing mother for 15 years and then managed the care of her favorite aunt in her declining years, as well. She also assisted Harold as he cared for his own mother in her final years. In 1988, Susan returned to school, obtaining her Masters of Education in agency counseling at the College of William and Mary. In 1994, based on her many years of personal experience with chronic migraine headaches as well as research and networking, she wrote a book entitled Managing Your Migraine, which was published by Humana Press that same year. She also held substance abuse counseling positions with two local agencies. A founding member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Susan was active in various social causes throughout her life. These included a fair housing group, as well as her church's justice and peace committee and its prison ministry group, the latter of which she spearheaded until declining health required her to limit her activities. Susan is survived by her husband of 52 years, Harold; her half siblings, Stella Malone (Al) and James E. Crowder, Jr. (Evelyn); her only child, Stephanie Burks Paine; son in law Pete Paine; and grandson Stuart. The family also wishes to recognize her devoted friends and caregivers for the strength and support they provided, particularly in Susan's final days. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 14, at 2 p.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
